Everyone knows that social media is a great means to reach sports fans. It's relatively inexpensive, measurable, flexible and efficient. Right? Well, turns out "efficient " is more true (truer...?) for some leagues than for others. The below chart, based on data from Sports Marketing Analytics, compares sports leagues by the size of their fan bases (in 000s) and the percentage of their fans who use Facebook to follow sports. For example, while the NFL has the largest fanbase by far, Facebook engagement is comparatively low. eSports, on the other hand may have a smaller number of fans, but yikes are they engaged online.
